How to buy a high-quality garage door?

When buying a garage door, you must pay attention to dozens of seemingly irrelevant details, which prove to be very important in the long run.
What types and materials of garage doors are most suitable for the Estonian environment?
The garage door fills quite a large surface of the building’s fa?ade, so that the choice of material is crucial. The most common materials are timber and steel plate. Next, you should decide whether the door should be with or without thermal insulation. Some manufacturers also offer garage doors with partial thermal insulation. When making your decision, you should consult a professional door salesman to clarify the characteristics of ordinary folding doors, one-piece up-and-over doors that move under the ceiling and the sectional doors that open vertically upwards. As the best- selling garage doors are the sectional doors that open vertically upwards, we will deal with the technical nuances related to them in detail.

What to begin with and what you should pay special attention to?
When you begin to choose a suitable sectional door, you should first measure the door hole, as well as the space from the door hole to the ceiling and sides. This excludes the possibility of finding out, after a long discussion with the door salesman, that the doors you have chosen do not fit your door hole after all. The sectional doors have many mobile details, and therefore special attention should be paid to their quality. The sections of the sectional doors should be made of at least a 0.5 mm thick galvanized double steel plate, and filled with liquid polyurethane. This solidly glues together the inner and outer plates in the facets, ensuring the complete stability of the construction. The primary advantage of steel plate compared to aluminium plate is its greater resistance to physical impacts. The optimal thickness of the steel plate, in order to ensure thermal insulation, is approximately 40 mm in our climatic conditions.

What happens if these conditions are not fulfilled?
If the quality of polyurethane is irregular and the glue properties are insufficient, the sun will burn it lose from the plate (especially with dark doors) and the door surface will lose its smooth look. The surface of the section has to be perfectly smooth and flat. If not, the door surface will swell and, in the case of wider doors, even curve vertically. When examining the cross-section, you should observe, if the hinges that hold the sections together are connected to the quadruple rolling mill or a corresponding metal reinforcement edge. If this is not so, the screw holes will soon widen, the sections will not hold together any longer and the door will start to break, letting the wind through. If the sections are tightly together and the surface is not curvy or swollen, but the heating bills go up, there is a reason to think that the inter-sectional gaskets are not meant for daily use. The gaskets used with high quality doors are made of weather-proof EPDM rubber. High quality door sections are produced in a way that your fingers cannot get caught between the door sections even accidentally. However, this danger exists, as it is very easy, due to the low level of the garage door, to naively put your fingers on the edge of the turning point of the sections, and get them caught between the sections as they straighten out.

Ask what the proposed price includes?
You should definitely make sure you understand what the price of different offers includes. The standard equipment of quality doors is usually ample, including automatic door latching, specially developed and designed for garage doors, safety equipment (for example, the cut-out system that is activated when a spring breaks, instantly blocking the falling door) and much more. One of the markers of product quality is, of course, the period of guarantee. With Hörmann doors, it is even up 10 years.

Here are some useful tips if you choose to give the competitors of Saksa Uks a chance.
• Make sure that the locking system of the door works without problems and does not require any inconvenient extra activities every time you open and close it.
• Ask what kind of measures have been taken in order to impede the entrance of people from the outside.
• Ask if you can see a door that has been intensely used for 3 – 5 years.
• What happens during a power failure if the door works with an electrical operator and there is no other access to the   garage?
• Is the production of the doors certified (the certificate reassures the quality of the product)?
• Are there any standard measured products that lower the price of the door?
• Is it possible to have a maintenance contract and how economical is it compared to single call?
• Is it possible to order side doors with a surface finish matching the garage door?
• In order to prevent unpleasant surprises, agree upon the design of the lock handles as well.
• Are the rollers regulated with their cantilevers, to ensure the door’s tight placement against the hole, or are the regulated rollers missing altogether?
• Are the safety brakes, which block the door when a spring breaks, part of the equipment?
• Ask for the given working cycle of the spring, which determines its resistance.

NB! You should pay attention to all these questions or you will have to deal with them again within a year or two.

Doors

Similarly to many other products, there is an abundance of offers in the entrance door market. The best examples of this are the prices of exterior doors, which can reach from a few hundred kroons to 7000euro. Everything seems to be in order, for what could be more convenient for the client than to have a variety of options? However, things get considerably more complicated once we have specified the requirements the exterior door to be bought must meet in our minds or on paper – thermal and acoustic insulation, security, weather-resistance, guaranteed service life, and finally, compatibility with the building, which it will doubtlessly represent. Consequently, we will try to answer the questions a potential buyer might think of while comparing different doors.

Before turning to the door salesman you should first measure the door hole to save time. This excludes the possibility of finding out, after a long discussion with the door salesman, that the doors you have chosen do not fit your door hole after all. You should always ask for standard measured products that make the price considerably more consumer-friendly.

Definitely, one of the most decisive factors in choosing an entrance door is thermal insulation. Listening to the diverse monologues of door salesmen may leave you the impression that products without thermal insulation are not frequently sold here, and this is also confirmed by the door leaf samples that show the thick thermal insulation layer in the cross-section. This layer may even be a few times thicker but if the door does not close tightly against the door-casing or only does it until the first winter it is not of great use. Therefore, ask the salesman for certified data issued by the manufacturer confirming the thermal insulation of the door. If the thermal factor K is up to 1.0 Wm2/K in case of timber doors, and up to 1.4 Wm2/K in case of metal doors, you can be satisfied with the thermal properties of the door you are buying

To be sure about the noise insulation, you must check the manufacturer’s certified data again. This seemingly irrelevant detail often turns out to be important only when the so-called ordinary door is replaced with a noise-blocking one.

Close attention should be paid to the hinges of the entrance door and their resistance. Here, a simple rule applies – the bigger the number of the guaranteed duty cycles is, the better. When choosing between different hinges, the three-way adjustable hinges should be preferred. The absence of a vertical adjustment option may create a situation where the weight of the door falls on only one of the hinges, leaving the rest of the 2 or 3 hinges just standing by. This, of course, soon results in the erosion of the “working hinge”, which is the most common reason for doors to fall out so quickly. The door hinges could also be placed inside, which considerably improves the external appearance of the door, as well as its security (unless safety bolts are installed on the hinge side). Besides, the door will open to the inside so that the snow fallen on the staircase will not get caught between the door leaf and the doorsill.

The humidity, entering through the micro-cracks of the entrance door surface layer, and the condensed water, appearing due to large temperature changes, can swell the door when the freeze, and break its constructions. Quality doors have a special drainage integrated in the door leaf in order to direct the humidity outside.

There are many options for making the entrance door more secure. The most important ones are the multi-point automatic or safety locking with drill-resistant and break-in blocking safety locks. In the case of doors with glazing, the external glass should preferably be of laminated safety glass, which makes it more difficult to break the window, thus reducing the burglary risk to minimum. The standard quality doors have double laminated glass, and it is possible to order windows with up to six-layered laminated glass.

The most common entrance door materials in Estonia are wood-framed plywood, timber, steel plate and aluminium. The right choice of material depends mostly on the usage conditions of the door, the architecture of the building and the wallet of the client.

Therefore, in the case of timber doors, for example, it is important to remember that if they are even partially left under weather influence, they will certainly need maintenance in due time. Timber has pores, which makes it a constantly transforming material. Unstable weather conditions only intensify the processes going on inside the timber. Therefore, the drying technology is extremely important with timber doors. With quality material, this detailed and thoroughly planned process takes ten months or more. It is also vital whether the timber door is impregnated against insects, fungi, humidity and UV radiation. Quality doors are impregnated at least twice – first, when the details are completed and later, before applying the colour coating of the door. It is useful to know that multipoint locking (at least a 3-point locking) will guarantee the stability of the timber door, as well as its wind and water-resistance.

The thermal insulation of metal doors is usually weaker than that of timber doors. With metal doors, you should keep in mind whether the external and internal plate and door-casing are thermally or completely cut off. This is necessary in order to prevent the condensation of air humidity and heat loss in the case of substantial temperature changes.

The doors used in outdoor conditions should definitely be made of galvanized steel plates and then be painted. If not, a condensation will appear between the cold metal and the paint (especially if the greasy steel plate has not been properly cleaned before painting), which will cause the metal plate to rust, leaving marks that are difficult to hide. Welding can also cause rusting in the welding area. Rust might also dribble from the metal intersections in the door angles. Quality products are made with special intersection coating technologies, such as electrolytic painting, in order to avoid these problems. All these factors point to the fact that quality steel doors are extremely difficult to produce.

Aluminium, however, is a very resistant and practical door material – there is no corrosion and no need for maintenance. The aluminium door is light and its pressure on the hinges is minimal.

There is no one correct answer for choosing the entrance door material, because everything depends on the building it will be attached to. Ideally, the entrance door forms a matching unity with the windows, balcony barriers, roof material, garage door, terrace and thousands of other details, among which one item could not be pictured separately from the others.
In the case of apartment buildings, the goal could be for all people living on the same floor, at least, to install the same kind of windows. Choosing between thousands of doors, however, you must surely not forget what a door is installed for in the first place – to make your home warm, noise-free and safe for as long as possible.
